The ping test

When you tap Run, your browser sends small requests straight to the test points, which are Amazon Web Services endpoints in each region. Those requests go from your browser to Amazon, not through us, and Amazon's servers see your IP address as they do for any request; Amazon's own privacy notice covers them. The requests carry no cookies. The measured times stay in your browser, and the test keeps its settings in the address of the page, so a link you share contains them.

Visit statistics

We count visits with Umami, an analytics tool we run on our own server at Hetzner Online in Germany. It sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses. It records the page, the referring site, the browser and device type, the country, and a few named events such as tapping Run, the verdict of a result or opening a merchant link. Event values are coarse: the game, the band word, the region names and the country you picked. No millisecond figure and nothing you type is recorded.

Server logs

Our web server records each request: the time, the page, the referring page, the response and the browser type. These logs leave out IP addresses and the part of a page address after the question mark, also in the referring page. When you open a link that starts with /go/, a separate log records which link it was, the page you came from and the browser type. Both logs are deleted after 14 days.

We keep server logs and visit statistics on our legitimate interest in running, securing and improving the site (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We use your email address and message to answer the message you sent, on the same basis.

How long we keep it

  • Server logs and the /go/ click log: 14 days.
  • Visit statistics: 13 months, then the analytics server deletes them. They hold no IP addresses or cookies.
  • Email: we keep a thread for 12 months after the last message, then delete it.

Who processes it for us

  • Hosting: netcup GmbH, Germany, runs the server that serves the site and keeps the server logs.
  • Visit statistics: our own Umami server at Hetzner Online GmbH, Germany.
  • Email: Fastmail, which hosts our mailbox. Fastmail stores mail outside the European Economic Area, so a message you send us is transferred there under the safeguards its terms provide.

We sell no data and share none with merchants. A merchant learns about you only if you go to its site and give it your details.
